The Collection
Museo Morandi, situated inside Palazzo d'Accursio in Piazza Maggiore, has been open on October 4th 1993 due to a considerable donation to Comune di Bologna by Maria Teresa Morandi, the artist’s sister. Added to an important group of works already part of the heritage of the Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Bologna, these works originated the widest and most relevant public collection dedicated to Giorgio Morandi. The collection nowadays consists of 62 paintings, 18 watercolours, 92 drawings, 78 etchings, 2 sculptures and 2 etched sheets.
During temporary exhibitions and for reasons of conservation, the works of Giorgio Morandi are shown in turnover.
The collection represents an unique opportunity to be acquainted with Morandi’s artistic path, expressed with all the techniques and illustrated in every single moment and poetic nuance. The exhibition concept, divided in 11 halls created in the former flat of the Cardinal Legato, analyses through a chronological path the seasons, which characterised the author’s activity: from his education to the maturity. Since its opening the museum has been enriched by loans coming from private collections and generously given in temporary deposit, which offer to the visitor the possibility of discovering unknown works.
The museum, beside giving value to the collection, organises a programme of temporary exhibitions aiming at comparing Morandi’s activity to the work of other protagonists of the art of 20th century; then it promotes initiatives and collaborates to exhibitions dedicated to the Bolognese artist by important institutions in Italy and abroad.
