FOR THE SELECTION OF ARTISTS

FOR THE "ROSE" RESIDENCY PROGRAMME

VILLA DELLE ROSE, BOLOGNA, 2018 - 2019

 

1. PURPOSE OF THE PUBLIC NOTICE

The 2018 Programme of the Istituzione Bologna Musei, approved by the Resolution of the Board of Directors file no. 454664/2017, among the objectives of the Modern and Contemporary Area, includes the 2018-2019 edition of the "ROSE" Residency Programme for artists, seeking to foster the international mobility of contemporary art and promoting its most current examples.

The public notice, in execution of the managerial decision as per file no.85076/2018, has the purpose of selecting 2 artists or collectives of artists who will design and produce an exhibition project for the historic Villa delle Rose site, one for the 2018 edition and one for the 2019 edition (See Annexes A and B). The projects, conceived during a stay at the Sandra Natali Residence for Artists in Bologna, home of the "ROSE" Residency Programme (See Annexes C and D), must be realised with full respect of the historical artistic elements that distinguish the exhibition site.

The "ROSE" Residency Programme will follow the schedule specified below:

1) "ROSE" Residency - Fall 2018

The artist or artist collective will be hosted at the Residence for a period of no less than 2 and no more than 8 weeks to be chosen between mid-October and end of November 2018. The project, developed and produced during the period of residence, will be exhibited in the historical venue of Villa delle Rose from 23 November to 6 January 2019.

2) "ROSE" Residency - Spring 2019

The artist or artist collective will be hosted at the Residence for a period of no less than 2 and no more than 8 weeks to be chosen between 18 March and end of April 2019. The project, developed and produced during the period of residence, will be exhibited in the historical venue of Villa delle Rose from 19 April to 26 May 2019.

 2. INTENDED AUDIENCE

This public notice is for artists whose recent activity is documented in the field of contemporary visual arts who, if not Italian, have a legal permit to enter and stay in Italy. Candidates must be self-sufficient in their daily activities, physically fit for carrying out their artistic activities and know the Italian or English language.

For artist collectives, the application must be submitted by one of the members of the collective having a proxy signed by the other members.

3.FINANCIAL RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO SUPPORT THE SELECTED PROJECTS

The support for each artist or collective selected by the Istituzione Bologna Musei will consist in the disbursement of € 10,000.00 gross to cover the costs of developing and producing the exhibition project for Villa delle Rose. The aforementioned sum will be disbursed in a single payment at the beginning of the period of residency to the artist's bank account, upon presentation of proper tax/fiscal documentation.

 

4. DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITIES

The selected artists must:

  • reside in Bologna at the Sandra Natali Residence for Artists for a minimum period - even non-continuous - of two weeks;

  • obey the rules for using the Residence (Annex D);

  • agree with the Management and the Programme's curator regarding the feasibility of the project during the conception and production phases;

  • collaborate with the staff of the Istituzione and with the staff of the company appointed thereby as support for the production of the project for everything related to the best outcome of the initiative. In particular, collaboration must be guaranteed for the communication and promotion of the residency programme, including the availability to participate in interviews, provide images of works free of rights, to be photographed and consent to the use of personal photos and documentation related to the programme;

  • participate in any meetings or activities possibly planned by the Istituzione in relation to the residency;

  • not carry out other work activities during the stay in Bologna;

  • procure all necessary work tools for the artistic work carried out during the period of residency. The residence is not equipped with professional equipment of any kind.

  • provide at their own expense and responsibility for the return transport of the works produced during the period of residency at the end of the exhibition.

5. TECHNICAL INFORMATION

The following information is to be considered valid for each edition of the initiative.
The following are understood to be the responsibility of the Istituzione Bologna Musei:

  • weekly cleaning of the residence;

  • utilities related to the consumption of electricity, gas, water;

  • ordinary and extraordinary maintenance of the apartment;

  • assistance of a person appointed by the museum available at the following times: Mon. - Fri. from 9 am to 2.30 pm.

  • production of a bilingual catalogue in line with the format created for the first edition of the ROSE Residency Programme

  • communication of the event

  • access and use of Villa delle Rose during the period of residency and the period of installation of the exhibition in total respect of all the current activities on the premises.

Please note that travel, food and anything not explicitly indicated above will be at the expense of the guests.


6. CRITERIA FOR ASSESSING CANDIDACIES

The Istituzione Bologna Musei reserves the exclusive right to select the artists.

The candidacies will be assessed by an expert commission composed of: Lorenzo Balbi, Artistic Director, MAMbo -Museum of Modern Art of Bologna; Lorenzo Giusti, Director of GAMeC - Bergamo Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery; Eva Marisaldi, artist; Giulia Pezzoli, Curator of “ROSE” Residency Programme and Kate Strain, Artistic Director, Grazer Kunstverein, Graz, Austria.

The Commission will select artists or collectives based on the following criteria:

Cultural quality of the artistic production      Up to 30 points

Originality of the artistic production             Up to 30 points

Motivation and relevance to the local context for the Residency           Up to 40 points

for a maximum score equal to 100. Only projects that have achieved a minimum score of 60 will be admitted.

The Istituzione reserves the right to discuss with the candidates the methods of implementation and the contents of the design and artistic orientation described in the presentation letter, without this constituting a commitment to approve the initiatives.

The results of the selection will be announced by 21 May 2018 through publication on the website: www.mambo-bologna.org

The winners will also be contacted personally by the Istituzione at the addresses they indicate.

7. REASONS FOR EXCLUSION

The following are not allowed to participate in this selection:

  • The members of the Commission in charge of the selection, their families, kin and similar to the third degree, including those who are employees or employers or who have collaborations or continuous and well-known relationships with members of the Commission itself;

  • Directors, advisers, consultants and employees (including with temporary contracts) of the Municipality of Bologna, who have taken part or contributed in any way to the drafting of the Notice and the documentation attached thereto;

  • Those who do not meet the requirements and do not comply with the conditions established by this Notice.

8. METHOD AND TERMS FOR SUBMITTING THE APPLICATION

The application form, completed according to the template provided (Annex 1) and accompanied by the artist’s identity card, must include:

  • an updated Curriculum Vitae;

  • an updated Portfolio (maximum 20 JPEG images with 300 dpi) with the most recent artworks (which may include documentation of recent exhibitions, installations, works, performances);

  • a presentation letter that briefly describes the design and artistic orientation that would be developed in Bologna and created for the Villa delle Rose exhibition venue and takes into account the local context in which it will be placed;

  • a release from the applicant authorising the Istituzione Bologna Musei to use, reproduce, display and disseminate texts and images relating to activities and works produced during their residency, without having any financial claim thereon.

Under penalty of exclusion, all documentation must be written and presented in Italian or in English.

These materials must be sent by email or registered mail or courier and must be received, under penalty of exclusion, no later than 12 noon (Italian time) on 6 April 2018.

NOTICE AS PER ARTICLES 7 AND 8 OF ITALIAN LAW NO. 241/90

Please note that the communication initiating the procedure, pursuant to art. 7 of Italian Law 241/90, is understood to be anticipated and replaced by this public notice and by the request made through the application form.

It is noted that the person in charge of the procedure pursuant to Italian Law 241/90 is Dr Lorenzo Balbi and that the procedure itself will start from the deadline for the presentation of the applications envisaged by the public notice.

The deadline for conclusion of the procedure is 60 days.
