Julian Charrière. All We Ever Wanted Was Everything and Everywhere

MAMbo, Sala delle Ciminiere
9 June - 8 September 2019

Julian Charrière (b. Morges, Switzerland, 1987), one of the most innovative artists of his generation, studied under Olafur Eliasson and immediately hit the modern art stage with his deep and provocative thoughts on the critical and confrontational relationship between the world of technology and that of art. In his creations, Julian Charrière reveals the invisible forces that mould the landscape, from geological events to a thirst for resources engineered in our digital era, including, on a more immaterial plane, the cultural projections that change the meaning and perception of a place. Through a series of videos, photos and installations that cover the story of science, the development of our media culture, romanticism in exhibitions and the current ecological emergency, Charrière encourages us to mediate, visually and conceptually, on today’s imaginary geographical sceneries. Backed by his long-term interest in the unseen processes behind the production of scientific knowledge and the different methods for making a discovery, Charrière tries to understand history through his work, looking at the past to imagine what the future holds. Like an archaeologist, the artist gazes into history to understand the future while reflecting on the present. Working in the field, he takes off to remote areas with extreme conditions and, in these “scientifically impossible” places on earth, he does not bring out the pure simple beauty of nature, but its vulnerability and the fractures between nature and civilisation. Exhibition curated by Lorenzo Balbi.

All We Ever Wanted Was Everything and Everywhere was realised with the support of the main sponsor Hera, the sponsor Gruppo Unipol, as well as the support of Regione Emilia-Romagna and Pro Helvetia.
